586,281. Presses for vulcanizing tyres and inner tubes. McNEIL MACHINE & ENGINEERING CO. Sept. 7, 1943, No. 14648. Convention date, Feb. 25. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In order to adjust the upper platen 15 on the press head 17, for different-sized mould sections 12, an interiorly- and exteriorly-threaded sleeve 21 is disposed between the threaded walls 24 of an opening 25 in the platen and a threaded bolt 18 formed integrally with the press head. The interior threads on the sleeve are right-hand threads and mesh with the bolt, and the exterior threads are left-hand and mesh with the wall 24. When the sleeve is turned in one direction the platen travels down the sleeve, and the sleeve itself travels down the bolt, so that the total distance of separation between the platen and the bolt is twice the distance of travel of the sleeve. The sleeve is turned by a reversible manually-operated ratchet gear comprising a long pinion 28 which meshes with gear teeth 27 on the sleeve. The pinion is rotated by a handle 32 and turns on a stub shaft. On the handle 32 is a housing 36 for a pawl 40 pressed by spring 43 against the pinion 28. The working stroke of the ratchet is clockwise, Fig. 4. To change the working stroke to counter-clockwise, a handle 42 secured to the pawl stem 41 and extending through a slot 39 in the housing is pulled out, turned through 180 degrees and allowed to sink back under the action of spring 43. The pinion may be locked against movement by means of a bolt 35 and washer 34. Rotation of the platen 15 is prevented by means of a rod 49 which slides through a sleeve in an arm 46 which is secured by bolts 47 to the press head and co-operates with a cam to guide the platen 15 in its opening and closing movements.
