Abstract
585,924. Coating webs. WARREN CO., S. D. Feb. 25, 1944, No. 3529. Convention date, Jan. 13, 1943. [Classes 96 and 140] The nozzle of an air brush for coating flexible webs such as cloth, paper and Cellophane (R.T.M.) comprises a leading lip 15 and a trailing lip 16 and a baffle member 17 secured to the leading lip 15. The baffle 17 presents a curved, preferably semi-cylindrical surface 18 to the web 1 at a distance therefrom which is approximately the same as that of the edges of the lips 14, 15. A groove or pocket 19 is formed between the flat face of the member 15 and the curved surface 18 and helps to eliminate fluttering of the web. Other shapes for the surface 18 are elliptical or a falling drop contour, it only being required that the curvature shall extend a substantial distance beyond the point of closest approach to the web. The curvature of the surface 18 within the pocket 19 may be either convex or concave, but the side of the recess should be of the order of that formed by a cylindrical surface 3/32 to ¥in. diameter with a tangential plane extending a distance equal to the radius from the point of contact. Two opposed air brushes form a slot with a width of .09in., and they are preferably mounted with the web vertical, the brushes themselves being capable of adjustment laterally or angularly to vary the direction of the jet. The brushes are described as applied in coating apparatus in which the web is passed in order through a bath and squeeze rollers, past the brushes and over floaters to a suction apron.
