Abstract

1345618 Web coating apparatus ILFORD Ltd 12 July 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36168/71 Heading D1L Apparatus for coating a travelling web 1 comprises a contra-rotating transfer roller 2 rotating in a trough 5 of coating liquid 6, a doctor blade 7 for metering the amount of liquid carried by the roller surface, linked flanged rollers 8 and 9 for guiding the web 1 in contact with the transfer roller 2 and the non-coated side of the web in contact with a precision roller 10 located immediately downstream of the point of separation of the web 1 and roller 2 adjacent the roller 2 and separated from the surface thereof by a distance greater than the combined thickness of the web and the layer of coating liquid. The precision roller, which stabilises the bead 11 (Fig. 2) of coating liquid formed between the web 1 and roller 2 is a roller which has a total run out not exceeding 0.001 inches and is mounted on high precision air or ball race bearings. The apparatus is particularly suitable for the coating of stripes of magnetic material onto the surface of a web of, for example, cellulose acetate when the transfer roller 2 is rotated at a surface speed higher than the speed of travel of the web and is provided with peripheral rings on its surface and the precision roller is made of stainless steel.
