Abstract
A solid transparent core of thermoplastic material, and of form and dimensions closely approaching those of the desired finished lens, is coated with a liquid or semi-liquid film of transparent thermoplastic material or of transparent thermosetting abrasion - resisting material, and the coated core is moulded in dies having optically-accurate surfaces. Thus, a core of methyl methacrylate polymer or polystyrene may be coated with (a) methyl methacrylate monomer, (b) allyl methacrylate monomer or (c) abrasion-resistant material in the form of cross-linked polymers such as polymers of esters of allyl alcohol or its derivatives, e.g. polymers of allyl methacrylate, chloracrylate or crotonate, diallyl oxalate or phthalate, or glycol dimethacrylate. The film may be applied by dipping or spraying, and as a monomer or a solution of polymer in monomer or in a volatile solvent. The monomers are polymerized during the moulding. The film may, or may not, have the same refractive index as that of the core. According to the first Provisional Specification, the core may be of thermosetting material.ALSO:A solid transparent core of thermoplastic material, and of form and dimensions closely approaching those of the desired finished lens, is coated with a liquid or semi-liquid film of transparent thermoplastic material or of transparent thermosetting abrasion-resisting material, and the coated core is moulded in dies having optically-accurate surfaces. Thus, a core of methyl methacrylate polymer or polystyrene may be coated with (a) methyl methacrylate monomer, (b) allyl methacrylate monomer or (c) abrasion-resistant material in the form of cross-linked polymers such as polymers of esters of allyl alcohol or its derivatives, e.g., polymers of allyl methacrylate, chloracrylate or crotonate, diallyl oxalate or phthalate or glycol dimethacrylate. The film may be applied by dipping or spraying, and as a monomer or a solution of polymer in monomer or in a volatile solvent. The monomers are polymerized during the moulding. The film may or may not have the same refractive index as that of the core. The core may be formed by machining, grinding and polishing, or by moulding. Specifications 482,836, 556,743, 572,748, 583,091 and 585,576, are referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification, the core may be of thermosetting material.
