Abstract

<PICT:0570837/IV/1> A polarizing sheet of plastic material is coated with a relatively hard light-transmitting resin polymerized in situ and secured thereto either autogeneously or by an adhesive. The polarizing sheet may comprise polarizing particles in a resin &c., a linear hydrophilia polymeric plastic, or a plastic having long, straight-chain molecules having conjugated systems of double bands, the particles or molecules being substantially similarly oriented. The coating may comprise methyl methacrylate or other unsaturated methylene compound, a vinyl compound, copolymers thereof, with or without hardening agents; various suitable substances are specifically set out. The adhesive, when used, may consist of a resin of urea-formaldehyde type or phenol-formaldehyde type, or of an alkyd resin. The material, or combination of materials, forming the coating is, preferably, so chosen that its refractive index is substantially that of the polarizing sheet for transmitted light. Polymerization may be effected by heating or by ulra-violet radiation. The Figure shows a polarizing sheet 10, the surfaces of which are not necessarily flat or smooth, secured by adhesive layers 12 to out layers 14 of highly - polymerized resinous material having optically smooth outer surfaces. The sheet 10 may be first coated with a solution of an adhesive such as "polymerise," the solvent being then mainly evaporated by baking, and may be suspended in a mould having optically smooth glass moulding surfaces. The resinous material may then be poured into the mould and polymerization effected by first heating to a low temperature, at then for from eight to fifteen hours at a high temperature; a surface active compound may be provided in the resinous material to facilitate free cleavage of the finished sheet from the mould. The mould may have plane walls, or curved walls for the production, with or without subsequent grinding of lenses embodying polarizers. Specification 548,759 is referred to.
