Abstract
585,544. Pyrophoric lighters. LOWENTHAL, B. Feb. 27, 1945, No. 4919. [Class 75 (iii)] In a pyrophoric lighter a friction wheel 11 is rotated in contact with a flint 8 to produce sparks for igniting a wick 4 by a ball or roller clutch member 13 which is mounted on a pivot pin 21 supported by ears on the top of the fuel casing 1 and is formed on each side with a square boss 17 projecting into correspondingly shaped apertures in a wick cap 18. This rotation is effected by pressing a thumbpiece 28 downwards into a recess in the casing 1 against the resistance of a spring 34. engaging a rod 27 attached to the thumb piece. At its lowest point a rod 37 on the thumb piece displaces a spring- catch 35 to release a member 25 and the member 25, which is attached to the wick cap 18 by a pivoted fork 24 is moved downwards on the rod 27 by a spring 30 until it engages a shoulder 29. On releasing the thumb piece the parts regain their initial position without rotating the friction wheel. The pivot pin 21 is in two parts, one screwing in the other and the head of one having a lateral projection engaging a recess in one of the ears and the head of the other being formed with grooves to receive a screwdriver. In another construction the thumb piece operates the fork 24 through a lever without lost motion.
