585,288. Expansion or construction joints. CONSTANTINE, J. V. Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3733. [Classes 20 (iv) and 107] In an expansion or construction joint, the edges of the adjacent masses or members between which the joint is formed are stepped or chamfered to form a groove extending along the length of the joint, and a plastic waterproofing caulking compound is deposited within the groove with a resilient metal strip as a cover, sprung into the groove or bearing therein, the gap or space left between the members in an expansion joint being filled by a compressible filling. The joint is used in the construction of floors, roofs, and walls and especially for joints subject to dampness. In an expansion joint. formed between two concrete members a and b, shown in Fig. 1, the corners e of the groove d formed by stepping the members a and bare engaged by a strip c which retains in position the caulking compound g of bituminous plastic or the like, with a filler f of fibrous material in the space left between the members a and b. In a construction joint the members a and b abut and the filler is omitted. In a floor construction shown in Fig. 3, a trough-shaped member h runs along the length of the joint. The metal strip k is formed with a central circular part, carrying the caulking compound g, and entering the groove i, the arms of the strip being extended and then bent at right angles to embed in the concrete members a and b. In further modifications longitudinal corrugations are formed on the metal strip and to form a flush surface with the members a and b waterproofing compound is placed above the strip.
