Abstract

585,243. Aircraft gun turrets. NORTH, J. D. Nov. 3, 1944, No. 21528. [Class 92 (i)] A rotatable gun turret for mounting on the . underside of an aircraft comprises a cupola 1 of sufficient depth to accommodate the gunner 7 in a recumbent attitude, a platform 11 or like support for the recumbent gunner, a gun-sight 19 and turret control handle 12 for use by the recumbent gunner, and a gun or guns 16, 17, mounted at the side of the platform and capable of elevation and depression relative to the turret. The turret shown rotates in bearings 5 in the aircraft fuselage and comprises the cupola 1, and an upper portion fitted with two curved ammunition boxes 3, 4 from which ammunition is fed in belts through flexible shoots 22, 23 to the guns. The upper portion also carries a power unit 13 which includes pumps for elevating the guns and for rotating the turrets, the unit being mounted on a platform 14 extending not more than half way across the turret. The platform 11 carries padded supports 8, 9 and 10 for the gunner who views the target through the sight 19 which is connected to the guns by links 20.
