[Class 44] [Also in Group XXVIII] A coupling device comprises a pair of screwthreaded interengaging elements adapted to be inserted into the open end of one of the members to be coupled and a deformable ring adapted to be expanded into gripping connection with the wall of the member when the two elements are drawn together, one or both of the elements having means for connecting it to the other member to be joined. The head 2 of a bolt 1 fits closely within a tube 3 and has a recess 4 for the reception of one end of a ring 6, the other end of which has a chamfered edge adapted to be engaged by a conical surface on a collar 7 surrounding the bolt and having a flange 7a engaging the end of the tube. A nut 8 engages the bolt and rests on the collar 7 which may have a sleeve-like extension 7b surrounding the end of the tube. The nut may be in the form of a long sleeve into which the bolt partially extends. In a modification an intermediate ring 7c, Fig. 12, having a tapered surface for the joint ring 6 carries an additional joint ring 14 which engages the tapered surface of the collar 7. The bolt 1a has a screw-threaded bore for connection to a threaded rod or other coupling member. The joint ring may be chamfered at both edges engaging a conical surface on the bolt head instead of the recess 4.
