Abstract
584,054. Concrete roads or pavements. SMITH, L. D., and PALMER, E. W. Dec. 1, 1944, No. 24081. [Classes 87 (i) and 107] A concrete road or pavement comprises blocks made in two different sizes, viz., relatively shallow blocks B resting on the surface of a concrete foundation A and covering the main part of the roadway or pavement, and relatively deep anchored blocks C that rest in trenches A<2> cut in the foundation, which has strengthening ribs A<1>. The blocks B are laid on a coat of bitumen, the intervening joints being filled with hot bitumen. The blocks C are positioned, by means of grooves C', over steel centering bars D, laid on fine grade concrete A', while still wet, in the trenches A<2>, which are filled with fine concrete A', into which stiffening plates E are pressed against the grooved sides C<5> to rest on projections C<6>. The upper surfaces B<2> and C<2> have grooves B' and C' and chamfered arrises, and preferably consist of two parts by volume of crushed granite, or an admixture of crushed granite and carborundum, and one part by volume of cement, with added water. The base layers B ' and C' preferably consist of four parts by volume of crushed granite to one part by volume of cement, with added water.
