583,925. Self - contained supply systems. FLETCHER, G. H., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 29, 1944, No. 12407..[Class 38 (iv)] Variable-speed, generators, with. A vehicle lighting system includes a machine or two coupled machines for producing A.C. for fluorescent lamps and D.C. for battery charging when driven above a predetermined speed but when the speed drops the machine or set runs off the battery as a converter to continue the A.C. supply to the lamps. In the form shown, as the vehicle speed rises the voltage of an auxiliary generator 13 on the axle rises and energises coil 12 of a coupling 5 whereof the machine 1 is driven for charging the battery 11 and supplying lamps 9. On reaching a predetermined charging current relay 18, 19 operates contasts 16, 20 to deenergize the field of inductor alternator 13 and transfer the energization of coil 12 to the battery and the machine continues to run as a double current generator until the battery voltage drops following a reduction of speed whereupon relay 18, 19 de-energises coil 12 and the D.C. side operates as a motor from the battery. The A.C. voltage is regulated by a reactor 24 having a saturating winding 25 energized from the battery under the control of a regulator 26 energised from rectifier 28 and a saturable reactor 10 may be in series with each lamp. An alternative type of coupling, e.g. centrifugal may'be employed.
