Abstract

581,757. Purifying water; filters. MOORE, R. P. April 5, 1945, No. 8476. [Class 46] A filter plant suitable for water purification comprises an enclosed filter chamber 7 separated by a perforated floor 8 from a filtrate chamber 5, the base of which forms the top of a chamber 2, which may be a settling chamber. A pipe 12 extends from the chamber 2 to the top of the filter chamber 7. Liquid is supplied through a pipe 3 to the chamber 2 which is provided with an outlet valve 34. When the valve 34 and also a valve 38 in a pipe 37 are opened, liquid discharging from the chamber 2 draws air in through the pipe 37, through the filtrate chamber 5 and up through the filter bed 10. The liquid may be water treated with coagulants, or with chemicals such as lime and soda, supplied from a container 23. Pipes from the container lead to both sides of an apertured plate 26 in a supply pipe 21. After agitation of the filter bed by air, a valve 29 is opened to admit washing water from a pipe 30. In a modification the wall of the filter chamber is detachably connected to the floor by bolts.
