Abstract

581,040. Drying drugs &c. WELLCOME FOUNDATION, Ltd. (Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc.). May 15, 1944, No. 9301. [Class 34 (ii)] Drugs and like materials in powdered &c. form are dried by passing the material from a feed hopper 13 to a discharge receptable 21 through an adjustably-inclined rotating cylinder 5 within which it is agitated and uniformly exposed to radiant heat emitted by one or more infra-red lamps 12 and to a current of heated air from a supply pipe 22 at the discharge or lower end of said cylinder. The cylinder 5 is formed of heat-resisting glass, and the lamps 12 are mounted in a row upon a support 12a externally of and parallel to the cylinder and adjustable towards and away therefrom. The cylinder is also internally ribbed and is rotated on rollers 5a at a controlled rate by an electric motor 9 through reduction gearing 8 and belt 6, the rollers 5a and motor 9 &c., also the driving motor 16 for a feeding conveyor 14 in the hopper 13, being mounted upon a support which is pivoted at one end about a horizontal axis 10 and is adjustable vertically at the other end by a screw 11. The Provisional Specification describes also a modification in which the lamps are located within the cylinder, the latter being made of steel &c. impervious to infra-red radiation.
