Abstract
In making solid and semi-solid polymers and interpolymers of ethylene by polymerization at elevated temperature and pressure, the ethylene used is free from, i.e. contains less than 1 per cent by volume of, other olefines and saturated hydrocarbons. The presence of the impurities may be avoided by control during manufacture, e.g. by the dehydration of ethanol, or they may be removed by fractional distillation. The usual catalysts, e.g. oxygen or per-compounds, may be used in the presence or not of liquid media, e.g. water. Interpolymerizing constituents specified are vinyl esters and unsaturated acids and their derivatives. Specifications 471,590, 497,643 and 8070/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
