Abstract
In the manufacture of solid and semi-solid polymers and interpolymers of ethylene by polymerization at elevated temperatures and pressures, the ethylene used is free from, i.e. contains less than 0.2 per cent by volume of, aliphatic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, e.g. aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, ethers and acids. These impurities may be removed by fractional distillation, by washing with water or by using adsorbent charcoal. Alternatively, the presence of impurities may be minimised by control of the conditions under which the ethylene is manufactured. In an example, ethanol is dehydrated over phosphoric acid on coke at 310 DEG C., scrubbed with cold water, passed over adsorbent charcoal and dried with calcium chloride. The invention is applicable also to the interpolymerization of ethylene with other monoolefines, vinyl esters and unsaturated acids and their derivatives.
