Abstract

579,839. Gas-blast switches. FLURSCHEIM, C. H., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1945, No. 590. [Class 38 (v)] In an air or gas-blast circuit-breaker, contact fingers 8, 9 pivoted at 10, 11 respectively, are connected to pistons 15, 16 loaded by springs 19, 20 urging the fingers into engagement with a fixed annular nozzle contact 6 on a stem 2. The ratio of piston-area to spring-force is made greater in the case of finger 8, so that on the admission of pressurised air this finger is opened first, thereby transferring the current to finger 9, the arc subsequently drawn thereat being extinguished when the air-pressure has sufficiently increased. Finger 9 and the cooperating part of contact 6 may be provided with arcing inserts such as tungsten. Any number of contact fingers may be disposed radially about the contact 6, of which one or more may be arcing contacts, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the contact pairs may be arranged in separate contact chambers. In addition an air blast extending axially in both directions from the contacts may be obtained by providing a further gas discharge opening in an inwardlyprojecting portion 21 of the member 12. Specification 567,255 is referred to.
