Abstract
541,941. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and WILD, R. W. June 17, 1940, No. 10465: [Class 38 (v)] In a gas-blast switch in which a resistance H<SP>1</SP> is connected between one of the contacts B and an auxiliary electrode, the latter is an annular ring H surrounding the movable contact F so that a blast of gas through a nozzle D passes the annular space between F, Hand quenches the arc therebetween. In Fig. 1, the switch is of the character set out in Specification 541,940, in which the nozzle is carried or constituted by the main movable contact and is closed by the arcing contact B. The pressuregas, in opening circuit, slides D to the left on to the contact F, so separating the main contacts C, D and opening ports E<SP>2</SP> whereby the pressure acts on piston F<SP>2</SP> to withdraw contact F. The blast through the nozzle sweeps the ionized gases from the main arc into the annular space, between F, H, aided subsequently by passages F' in the contact F itself, causing that space to break down, arc-quenching taking place in the manner usual with resistance-switching. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), contacts C, D are dispensed with and the nozzle is fixed behind the place occupied by the ports.
