Abstract

579,624. Valve gear; valves; cooling cylinders. COCHRANE, W. June 9, 1944, Nos. 11039/44 and 12029/45. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A multi-ported conical valve 1 is rotated or oscillated against a correspondingly shaped seating 2, extending into an inlet chamber 3 through which the exhaust gases pass to heat the charge before admission to the cylinder. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the valve has four ports which register with inlet and exhaust ports and carries a pinion 15 which is rotated by racks 16, 17, mounted on rack bars 18, 19, carrying rollers 22, 23, and cams 24, 25, on a shaft 26, driven from 'the crankshaft. On the exhaust stroke the ports 6, of valve 1, are fully open to the exhaust ports so that the exhaust gases pass out through ducts 10, traversing the inlet chamber 3, and heat the charge. The cam 24 next forces the rack bar 18 to the left in Fig. 2, and through the rack 16 and the pinion 15, rotates the valve to close the exhaust ports and to bring the ports 6 fully open to the inlet ports. Near the end of the induction stroke one of the two humps on the cam 25 thrusts the rack bar 19 to the left, Fig. 2. and the valve is rotated by the rack 17 and the pinion, so that both inlet and exhaust ports are closed. The valve 1 remains stationary during the compression and firing strokes. When the exhaust occurs the second hump on the cam 25 completes the movement of the rack bar 19, so that the valve opens the exhaust ports. One or more sparking-plugs 31, a compression relief valve and a fuel injector fed by a variable-stroke fuel injection pump may be uncovered at the appropriate times by the ports 6. In a modified construction the valve is oscillated by a single rack operated by a cam track on a cylindrical cam and movements of the valve and rack are damped by inertia springs. In a two-stroke engine the valve may be operated intermittently by a Geneva stop mechanism the valve controlling only the exhaust ports. Mixture or air supplied by a compressor is heated in the chamber 3 before entering the cylinder through piston-controlled ports. Cylinders, cooling.-In a 24-cylinder aircraft engine the cylinders are arranged as shown in Fig. 13 in banks of six with the cooling fins parallel to the direction of flight. Specification 532,977 is referred to.
