Abstract

Readily polymerizable open chain monoethylenically unsaturated compounds having a terminal methylene group, alone or in admixture with not more than 50 per cent of one or more copolymerisable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds are polymerized in the presence of an aliphatic thiol or a compound obtained by oxidising aliphatic thiols to any stage below the maximum normal valence state of sulphur. Preferably from 0.01 to 5.0 per cent of the sulphur compound is employed and polymerization is carried out in aqueous dispersion at elevated temperatures. The unsaturated compounds are all vinyl or vinylidene compounds, specified are acrylic, chloracrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters, vinyl chloride, fluoride and bromide and vinylidene chloride. Specified copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds are ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, alkyl vinyl ethers, diethyl fumarate and diethyl maleate. The aliphatic thiols are free from closed ring structures, specified sulphur compounds are ethyl, amyl, octyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl mercaptans, pentadecane thiol-8, ethanedithiol, trimethylene dithiol, decanedithiol-1.10, didodecyl disulphide, thioglycollic acid, thioacetic acid, mercaptoethanol, diisopropyl xanthogen disulphide, penta - acetyl 1 - thio - sorbitol, methyl - 2 - methyl - 3 - mercapto-propionate and tetra ethyl thiuram disulphide. Examples are given of the polymerization in aqueous emulsion of methyl and butyl methacrylates, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate, and of the preparation of copolymers of vinyl chloride and (a) methyl acrylate, (b) dimethyl fumarate, (c) vinylidene chloride and (d) acrylonitrile, and of vinylidene chloride and (e) vinyl acetate, (f) butyl methacrylate and (g) acrylonitrile and of vinyl acetate and acrylonitrile.
