Abstract
Methyl methacrylate is bulk polymerized in admixture with a methyl methacrylate polymer in the presence of a mercaptan accelerator, such as tert.-dodecyl or tert.-hexadecyl mercaptan, a peroxide catalyst, such as benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide, and at least a trace of a copper compound, for example copper oxide, sulphate, methacrylate, or oleate. The speed of polymerization may be increased by incorporation of an acid, preferably a polymerizable acid, such as acrylic, methacrylic, or beta, beta-dimethacrylic acid. The methyl methacrylate monomer may contain a stabilizer such as hydroquinone, and may also be used in conjunction with minor proportions of other monomers containing a vinylidene group, for example vinyl acetate, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, chlorostyrene, vinyl methacrylate, diglycol methacrylate, acrylonitrile, and vinylidene chloride. The polymeric component may be homopolymeric methyl methacrylate or a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with a minor proportion of another monomer containing a vinylidene group, such as styrene and chlorostyrene.
