Abstract
579,008. Rotary plug valves. TRIGGS, W. W. (Merco Nordstrom Valve Co.). April 5, 1944, No. 6376. [Class 135] [Also in Groups II and XXXIV] To prevent or reduce the seizing tendency between the sliding surfaces of a rotary plug valve composed of a base metal such as a carbon or stainless steel, or nickel, the surface of either the plug or its seat, or both, is coated with fine chromium boride crystals distributed in a matrix of metal having seizing characteristics. As shown in the Figure, both the plug member 14 and its seating 12 have such coatings 67, 69 and also intermediate coatings 66, 68 of a ductile metal to provide a bond between the base metal and the chromium boride matrix. The metal for the matrix and the intermediate coating may be stainless steel, nickel or the alloy known under the Registered Trade mark as " Monel" metal. The matrix is preferably sweated on to the surface of the plug or seat from a rod by means of a welding torch.
