Abstract

578,986. Centrifugal separators. ALEXANDER, W. March 28, 1945, No. 7812. [Class 23] In a vortex separator the gases to be treated are introduced in a whirl through pipe 2 and blades 4 and the cleaned gases exhaust at 3. The separated solids with some entraining air pass through perforations 8 to a collecting chamber 6. The perforations 8 are of such shape that, despite the drop in pressure towards the outlet in the vortex chamber, the exit pressure at the perforations 8 into the collecting chamber is substantially the same for all. The necessary increase in pressure at perforations near the outlet may be produced by shapes b, c, Fig. 6, and a decrease in pressure at perforations near the inlet, by shapes g, h, k, Fig. 7. In place of perforations, axially directed slots may be used with edges which vary along the length so as to produce uniform pressure on the collecting chamber side.
