Abstract
In an electric cable, the rubber insulation is protected against the action of external air or air trapped between the strands of the conductor or between the conductor and insulation by an outer and/or inner layer of a composition comprising a mixture of polyisobutylene with a synthetic rubber-like material consisting of (a) polymerized-chloro butadiene, or (b) a copolymer of butadiene and acrylic acid nitrile, the ratio of the polyisobutylene to the synthetic rubber-like material being greater than 4 to 1 and not greater than 5 to 1. Solid polymers of ethylene may be incorporated in the first composition. The outer layer is enclosed by a thin covering of a material which is at least temporarily heat-resistant, e.g. a thin film of "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark), or cellulose triacetate or a layer of polymerized 2-chlorbutadiene or a copolymer of butadiene.
