Abstract
577,904. Gun mountings; sights. ROSE, A. G., NICHOLLS, K. H., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. April 19, 1943, No. 6280. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] The sighting arm associated with the guns 11 in a gun turret moves about an axis which is parallel to the elevating axis of the guns and about an axis coincident with the training axis, the movements of the arm serving to operate means, such as valves, which move in synchronism with the guns or gun platform and which actuate means for moving the guns through an angle substantially equal to that traversed by the sighting arm. In the construction shown, the sight 35 is carried by an arm 33 pivotally mounted at 34 on a member 36, the latter being pivotally mounted in the main framework of an aircraft turret for rotation about an axis coincident with training axis of the guns 11. Movement of the member 36 by the movement of the sight actuates, through the medium of an arm 37 and link 38, a valve 41 attached to a bracket 42 on the turret, the valve when thus operated controlling the operation of an oil motor 43 driving the turret platform 13. The arm 33 extends beyond pivot 34 the extension being connected to a link 31 having its lower end connected to the arm 27 of a two-armed lever 26, 27, pivoted in a bearing 29 secured to platform 13. The other arm 26 is connected to a link 24 which is also connected to a frame 23 freely mounted on the common axis of the guns. The frame in turn is connected by a link 22 to a valve 19 attached to one of the gun carriers 16, the valve serving to control the movements of two elevating motors, one for each gun, housed in bearings 18 which form part of the bearing members 12 about which the guns are elevated. Thus, movement of sighting arm 33 about axis 34 serves to elevate or depress the guns through the required angle. The valves 19, 41, may be of the construction described in Specification 577,922, [Group XXIX], and the elevating motors may be of the construction described in Specifications 576,621. Specifications 577,907, 577,908, and 577,919 also are referred to.
