Abstract
577,745. Catalytic apparatus and processes. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Oct. 29, 1942, No. 15178. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1941. [Class 1 (i)] In vapour phase reactions with suspended catalysts the gaseous products leaving the reaction chamber are separated from the catalyst and the later is divided into two portions, one being regenerated and the other being cooled and returned to the reaction zone at a point near its exit to quench the reaction. The process is particularly applicable to the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons, e.g., of butylene to butadiene, where close control of the reaction time is important. In the illustrated reactor, the catalyst and the butylene are supplied by pipes 18 and 5 respectively to reaction chamber 26 which is surrounded by a ring of cyclone separators 27. About 90 per cent. of the catlyst is separated and falls to the bottom of the vessel, being removed by pipe 25. The reaction products leaving the top of the vessel pass through quenching chamber 70 and pipe 72 to a cyclone separator (not shown) from which a part of the recovered catalyst is passed through a cooler and returned to the reactor by pipe 100.
