Abstract
577,162. Distilling water on lifeboats. MUNRO, D. J. June 30, 1944, No. 12526. [Class 32] A distilling apparatus for use in ships' lifeboats &c. comprises in combination a boiler having a fire box or a compartment for a liquid fuel burner beneath it, a receptacle for condensed water supported inside the boiler above the level of the water therein and a condenser consisting of a hollow vessel of downwardly tapering form supported at the otherwise open top of the boiler with its apex above or in the upper part of the receptacle for condensed water. The boiler 2 has a bulge 4 near the top by which it is supported within an outer casing 6 so as to provide an annular flue space 8 between the boiler and the casing. A detachable chimney 30 communicates with this annular space. The receptacle 10 for condensed water is supported, above the level of the water in the boiler, by legs 12. The condenser 14 is of conical form, and is partly closed by a dished plate 24 having a central aperture 26 and there is an outlet pipe 28. When used in a ships' lifeboat sea water is supplied to this condenser by hand by means of a cup. The casing 6 is supported upon a stand 32 arranged to receive a firebox 34 in which solid fuel may be burnt. This fire box may be removed and replaced by a liquid fuel stove.
