[Class 64 (iii)] A domestic air heating and ventilating system, associated with -an open fireplace 7 having a fire-basket 22 and firegrate or bars 12, comprises an air heater 2 which is in the form of horizontal or inclined tubes 17 jointed to end headers 18, 19 and is located in a chamber 21 above the grate 12, the headers 18, 19 respectively being connected to an air inlet duct 8 through a fan 1 and duct 16 and to controlled delivery ducts 48 leading to rooms to be heated. A water heater 13 may be installed at the bottom of the chamber 21, providing an opening 29 between the fire-basket 22 and said chamber and also a passage for the supply of fuel from a container 27 to the grate 12 ; openings 28A for the admission of secondary air to the chamber 21 and an outlet 47 from the latter are also provided in the back 31 of the fireplace. The gas flows to the chimney 32 through the fire flue and the air heater chamber may be controlled by a two-bladed damper 3 which is actuated either by hand or automatically by a thermostat in the delivery air ducting beyond the heater ; a thermostat is also fitted near the air heater for controlling the motor of the fan 1. The fireplace is preferably provided with a cast-iron &c. casing 35 housing the heater 2, damper 3 &c. and supporting the air ducts 16, 48, chimney 32 and fireplace surround 36 &c. the space 37 between the casing 35 and surround 36 being used for heating by convection the air in the room in which the fireplace is installed, grilles 38 being located in the surround to permit circulation of the air for this purpose. Additional air for combustion may be supplied to the grate 12 from the outlet ducting of the fan 1.
