[Class 83 (iii)] Locking mechanism for a rotary indexing member comprises a rotary member secured to and rotating with the indexing member and having a periphery formed at spaced locations, corresponding to the indexing positions, with locking elements arranged in opposed pairs, a pair of locking arms anchored at a location remote from the axis of rotation of the rotary member and being arranged for wedging engagement with a pair of the locking elements so as to lock the rotary member in the position to which it is indexed, and means for opening and closing the locking arms. The invention is shown applied to a lathe turret 12, Fig. 1, having a member 13 secured thereto and formed around its periphery with recesses 14 adapted to be engaged by tapered dogs 15a, 15b carried by arms 16a, 16b. The common pivot 17 of the arms 16a, 16b is permitted a slight movement towards and away from the axis of the member 13, as by forming the pivot as the crank pin of a crank 20 journalled at 21 in a part of the machine such as the turret slide 10. The ends of the two arms may be geared together as shown in Fig. 4, the pivot 17 being formed' half on each arm or wholly on one arm. A spring 18 tends to move the arms into the locking position and they may be opened by the manually or power operated device 19- shown in Fig. 1. The lands 22 between the recesses 14 are relieved so that the rear edge of a recess stands proud of the leading edge to prevent over-running.
