Abstract
In the manufacture of microporous rubber for battery separators and the like by the incorporation and subsequent removal of fine particles, a rubber solvent which acts as a plasticiser is added to the dough to facilitate manipulation, particularly extrusion, the solvent being removed prior to vulcanization and washing out of the fine particles. Suitable solvents are xylene, coal tar naphtha, higher ketones such as cyclohexanone. Starch is a suitable pore-producing agent. According to an example, 23 lbs. of natural rubber are mixed with 100 lbs. of maize starch, 6.3 lbs. of sulphur, 0.4 lbs. of diphenylguanidine, and 0.5 lb. of zinc oxide. The mix is transferred to an internal mixer, and 30 lbs. of methyl cyclohexanone is added at 60 DEG C. The dough is extruded on to a belt conveyer which transfers it to a drying tunnel heated to 80 degrees to remove solvent. The sheet is vulcanized as such, or cut up and interleaved with paper. After vulcanization, the material is treated for 1 hour with 1 per cent sodium hydroxide solution and for 30 minutes in boiling wash water. It is finally treated with a wetting-out agent. Reclaim or synthetic rubber may replace the natural rubber, wholly or in part. Carbon, sawdust, lignin may be included in the mix. Specification 530,721 is referred to.
