Abstract

574,452. Spark-gaps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., GRIEVE, A., WELCH, D. F., and SCOTT, W. J. April 9, 1943, No. 3076/42. [Class 39 (i)] A hermetically-sealed spark-gap comprises metal (nickel) electrodes 3, 4 located in a sealed envelope 1 containing hydrogen at a pressure above 250 mm. of mercury, the electrodes having circular faces about 12.5 mm. in diameter and spaced 3.5 mm. apart, one or both faces being concave with a radius of curvature not less than 5.5 mm., the electrodes being spaced apart by a ceramic hollow cylinder 5. The junction between the cylinder 5 and the electrodes forms a dielectric discontinuity which ionizes the gas filling during operation. Particles of magnesia may be introduced into the envelope and some of these settle ultimately on the electrodes where they form points of high local dielectric stress and further improve the ionization. The hydrogen is commercial gas containing water-vapour and the preferred pressure is 1100 mm. Such a gap will operate at 450 sparks per second at 4 kV. Specification 440,100 is referred to.
