Abstract

574,053. Military land mines. JONES, E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 11, 1942, Nos 3189/42 and 382/43. [Class 9 (ii)] An ignition device for military land mines comprises a glass, porcelain or like frangible container 13 for a priming charge 15 of a composition which is not readily ignited by friction except in the presence of hard particles, which container is located in a recess 18 in an anvilforming body 4 of steel or hard plastic material, in another recess 19 in which is loosely located a light metal pestle 5. The container 13 opens at one end into a detonator tube 2 and the device is combined with a canister (not shown) containing the main explosive charge. The mine is sunk into the ground and covered by a metal plate supported by weak brackets under a light covering of earth. The plate is depressed when a vehicle passes over it, and causes the pestle 5 to fracture the glass or like container 13 and grind the particles into the charge 15, and thereby to explode the latter and fire the mine. The priming charge may be based on a mixture of mercury fulminate, antimony sulphide and potassium chlorate, and may include some tetrazene or lead styphnate.
