Abstract

573,564. Boron. JONES, W. D., and ROBIETTE, A. G. E. Feb. 27, 1943, No. 2603. [Class 90] [Also in Group II] Powders containing boron-carbide are decarburised by being subjected at a temperature between 750‹ and 1,100‹C. to an atmosphere containing by volume 5-25 per cent. of hydrogen, not more than 8 per cent. water-vapour, 2.5-9.0 per cent. carbon dioxide, 5-30 per cent, carbon monoxide, the balance being mainly or wholly nitrogen. The atmosphere may be produced by the partial combustion, followed by partial dehydration of coal gas, coke oven gas or hydrocarbons such as methane, propane or butane and the used atmosphere re-circulated, controlled amounts of oxygen or oxygen-containing gases such as air being added to restore the carbon dioxide content. After treatment the powder may be cooled in the same atmosphere or in a reducing atmosphere such as cracked ammonia or may be sintered by increasing the temperature.
