Abstract

573,085. Cementation. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and HANCOCK, P. F. Oct. 20, 1943, No. 17239. [Class 72] Gaseous atmospheres for the cementation of iron and steel are produced by adding not more than 20 per cent of one or more saturated hydrocarbons containing not more than 10 carbon atoms, and preferably not more than 4, to coal or coke oven gas, the latter either before or after the addition of the hydrocarbon being passed over a heated bed of material such as a refractory or charcoal which may be activated. The temperature of the bed is preferably between 600‹ C. and 1100‹ C., and the gas produced is cooled and dried before use in a carburizing furnace.
