Abstract
A synthetic rubber is produced by polymerizing a mixture of butadiene-1-3 or a methyl or dimethyl derivative thereof and a smaller quantity of an anilide or methyl anilide of acrylic or methacrylic acid; there may be present still smaller quantities of substances known to interpolymerize with butadiene, such as styrene, methyl acrylate, methacrylate or a -chloracrylate, and acrylonitrile. Examples describe the emulsion polymerization of mixtures of butadiene with methacrylic anilide, or, in one case, with methacrylic xylidide, and it is stated that similar products may be made using methacrylic toluidides or acrylic anilide. Other examples describe the properties of the products when compounded with channel black, pine tar, stearic acid, zinc oxide, sulphur, mercaptobenzthiazole and phenyl-b -naphthylamine and vulcanizing.
