Abstract
Vulcanized rubber which contains cellulosic material, e.g tyres or belting, is reclaimed by comminuting, mixing with an oxidizing agent as a solid or liquid, heating, and sheeting between rolls to plasticize the rubber. The oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen or other peroxide, a persulphate, a chlorate, or a hypochlorite, may be used with a little acid, e.g. hydrochloric or phosphoric acid, and wetting agent, e.g. 1/2 per cent of sulphonated "Lorol" (Registered Trade Mark). The rubber may be sheeted by passing five times through grinding rolls, the tendered cotton being reduced to a fine powder dispersed in the rubber. Hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid are preferred as they leave no residue to be washed out.ALSO:Vulcanized rubber which contains cellulosic material, e.g tyres or belting, is reclaimed by comminuting, mixing with an oxidizing agent as a solid or liquid, heating, and sheeting between rolls to plasticise the rubber.
