Abstract
572,568. Aerial bombs. BURNEY, C. D. Feb. 13, 1940, No. 2776. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aerial bomb adapted for gliding flight after release from aircraft is provided with wings 2 mounted on a saddle piece 6 and attached to the bomb body 1 solely by means of a strap 3 encircling the bomb body. The saddle on one side conforms to the shape of the bomb body below its centre of gravity and on the other side with bearing surfaces for the roots of the wings to give the wings the desired dihedral angle and angle of incidence. The straps may be provided with intermediate fastening or tensioning devices. The elevator 4 and fixed rudders 5 may be carried by a removable tail-piece mounted on the bomb, which is otherwise of ordinary construction.
