Abstract
Quebrachitol is obtained from rubber latex serum by adding lime, and heating it sufficiently to produce precipitation by the lime of constituents in the serum, which are then separated. Excess lime is removed from the serum, the pH adjusted to below 5 and the acidified serum is passed through a cation exchange material, to remove monovalent metal ions and nitrogenous material. The thus treated serum is evaporated and quebrachitol crystallises out. Carbon dioxide or phosphoric acid is used to precipitate excess lime from the serum and the pH is adjusted by the addition of a dilute solution of a strong acid. The serum may be passed through an anion exchange material prior to evaporation to effect further removal of nitrogenous material.
