Abstract
570,471. Centrifugal machines. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd. Oct. 22, 1943, No. 17432. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1942. [Class 23] A mixture, such as steam and water, is led into a cylinder 12 containing a tapered, or straight rotor 17, separated water being drained through an outlet 15, and steam escaping through a pipe 16. A partition 11 may separate off a portion 13 of the cylinder, a port 24 for the steam being of less diameter than the entrance 22 of the rotor. Water separated within the rotor is ejected between vanes 23 into the cylinder 12. Further vanes may be arranged on the outside of the lower end of 17. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5, vanes 26 are fixed to the shaft 18. After being initially rotated by a gear 19, the drive of the shaft may be imparted through the steam flowing through passages between the vanes 26, and the means driving the gear 19, disconnected. The entry front 14 may be tangential, or otherwise, to the bore of the cylinder 12.
