Abstract

The hydrolysis of halohydrins to produce glycols, glycerol or an alkyl glycerol is effected in a medium of alkalinity within the "carbonatebicarbonate range" an expression which is precisely defined, the mixture being maintained within that range during the process by the addition of alkali hydroxide. In a similar manner, polyhalogenated hydrocarbons having the halogen atoms on vicinal carbon atoms may be hydrolysed to the corresponding polyhydric alcohols. The initial compounds may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aralkyl, and may be saturated or unsaturated. Among the alkali hydroxides that may be used, lithium rubidium and caesium hydroxides are mentioned. Specification 37200/38 as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is referred to.
