[Class 73] [Also in Group VI] In cigarette-making machinery, a series of strips of thermoplastic film is secured at intervals to the paper strip to stiffen it, the stiffened parts being used as mouthpieces. The strips may be cut from a length of material or be formed by spraying the film on to the paper. A conveyer 11 draws paper strip from a spool 10 and simultaneously a film of synthetic resin or other thermoplastic material is drawn from a spool 12 beneath a'heated die 13 adapted to punch out from the film a piece 20 having a length sufficient to form a mouthpiece and a width such that opposite edges just meet on the finished cigarette. Pins 24 on the conveyer 11 engage in holes 22 in the paper strip and the film to feed both forwards beneath a tobaccofeeding mechanism 28 and dies 29 which fold over and effect the gumming of the paper strip, the pins beneath these devices being withdrawn while these are functioning. Both these devices are heated to maintain the film plastic, temperatures between 180‹ F. and 370‹ F. being suitable for this purpose. Finally, the cigarettes are cooled rapidly at 30 before being cut by a double cutter 31 which removes completely the section of the strip containing the perforation. The film may be applied to the paper in successive layers with or without the interposition of pigments or fire-resistant material and may be on either the inside or outside of the paper or on both sides.
