Abstract

1,089,943. Making multi-ply bags. W. ERNST, [trading as WILHELM ERNST]. July 30, 1965 [July 30, 1964], No. 32764/65. Heading B5D. Multilayer blanks, with one layer smaller than another, are cut from superimposed moving webs, of which one web 13, forming the larger layer, has previously had transverse folds 17 made in it at blank length intervals, and another web 11, forming the smaller layer has corresponding transverse weakening lines in it. Tension is applied to the superimposed webs to open up the folds in the web 13 and separate lengths of the web 11. This web is then cut into blanks. In the embodiment, the web 11 is fed continuously or intermittently through a device 12 for producing the weakening lines. In the former case the device moves with the web and in the latter case the device may be combined with a compensating device to allow the continuous feeding of the web through the rest of the apparatus. Simultaneously folds are produced in the web 13 by device 15 and held in place by guide 16. A gluing device 18 applies glue to the inner surface of the web 13 which is then combined with the web 11 by feeding rollers 19. Rollers 20, rotating at a higher speed than rollers 19, causes the web 11 to be split at the weakened lines and the fold 17 in the web 13 to be opened out. A third web 23, adhesived on 'its inner surface by gluing device 22, may subsequently be applied to the exposed surface of the web 11 by roller 24. The composite web is then cut into blanks by device 25. The web 11 may be a padding layer, and may have smaller width than the other layers which may be of paper. The stamping device 25, as well as cutting the combined web in the region of the fold 17, may also determine the outline shape of the blanks.
