Abstract
569,457. Typewriters. NATIONAL MARKING MACHINE CO. Dec. 23, 1943, No. 21549. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1942. [Class 100 (iv)] In a laundry-marker wherein the platen is first rocked from article-receiving position, Fig. 1, to printing position and then raised to receive a type imprint, the former movement admits fluid pressure to a cylinder so as to effect automatically the latter movement. The types 12 are carried by wheels 11 geared to sectors 15 having arms 17 with handles 18 projecting through slots 19 in the casing 10 which has index marks 20. The types are aligned by detents 22 on the arms engaging toothed racks 21. The platen-carrier 64, Fig. 2, is pivoted at 31 to a base bracket 30 and receives sliding rods 66 carrying the inker 68 which has a roller 69, reservoir 70 and wick 71, the inker being adjusted by a screw 77 rotatable within a cross-bar 74 secured to the rods and screwing into the carrier 64. The platen is moved by hand against toggle springs 91 which complete the travel to printing position. Rods 87 are pivoted at 88 to the carrier 64 and slide through guides 86 pivoted at 85 within U-shaped members 83 pivoted to the base at 82, pivot 88 crossing the line 31, 86 during the travel of the platen. To replenish the reservoir 70, the platen is moved forwards beyond the article-receiving position and this is effected by pressure on a handle 98 which rocks detents 94 away from shoulders 93 on the members 83. The platen cover 62 is extended at 63 to form a guard. The platen 57, Fig. 4, has a resilient inset 61 and end handles 59, and has guide pins 115 within a plate 40 carried by posts 36 mounted in the carrier 64, the platen being secured to a bracket 54 screwed into the piston-rod 46 of a piston 43 within a cylinder 42, so that fluid entering the cylinder by pipe 107 raises the platen for impression. This is effected automatically at the end of the platen travel by a push-button 106, Fig. 7, engaged by the carrier 64 and opening a normally-closed valve 104 which connects to a normally-open valve 100 in the supply line 99. To effect repeated raising of the platen whilst it is held in printing position, valve 100 is closed by a button 103 which vents pipe 102, button 103 being actuated by the head 113 of a rod 112 and piston 110 within a cylinder 109 connected to pipe 107 by a needle valve 111. The raising of the platen may be controlled by a safety device, Fig. 13, consisting of push-buttons in the platen handles and in series between the pipe 107 and cylinder 42, the air passing in through one guide pin 115, the two handles in turn and then down the hollowed stem of bracket 54 and through the hollowed piston-rod 46, so that the platen cannot be raised unless both handle-buttons are depressed.
