Abstract

568,721. Explosives. HERCULES POWDER CO. July 2, 1941, No. 8356. Convention date, Jan. 9, 1941. [Class 9 (ii)] To reduce flash in smokeless powder comprising nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine, a mixture of potassium and barium nitrate is incorporated, the ratio of barium nitrate to potassium nitrate being about 1.55 to 3.1 and the ratio of nitro-cellulose to the total nitrate content being about 17.4 to 33.5. A stabilizer such as diphenylamine may be incorporated and also a small percentage of graphite. The nitrocellulose is dehydrated with alcohol, the nitroglycerine, salts, and stabilizer added, together with a solvent, for example ether or alcohol and/or acetone, and the ingredients mixed until they are colloided. The material is then pressed and extruded through a die and the grains are then dried, screened, and .glazed. One example given is : Parts by weight. Nitrocellulose 77.00-75.00 Nitroglycerine 19.60-20.50 Diphenylamine - .50- 1.25 Barium Nitrate 1.40- 3.25 Potassium Nitrate .90- 1.05 and, if desired, Graphite .20- .40 and Dinitrotoluene .90- 1.10
