Abstract
568,304. Pipe joints. AVEBURY, J. LUBBOCK, LORD. July 30, 1943, Nos. 12434 and 16854. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe joint comprises a sleeve 3 of elastic material which is normally of smaller diameter than the pipes 1, 2, an expander 4 of larger diameter than the pipes and adapted to be inserted within the sleeve, and a casing 5 surrounding the sleeve and expander. The sleeve ends 7 grip the pipes, may be tapered and may be turned in as shown or extend outwardly beyond the casing. The ends of the casing are turned inwards leaving openings 6 larger than the pipes by less than twice the thickness of the sleeve. The ends of the expander may also be turned in. The casing may have conical ends and may comprise wire braiding with end caps. The expander may be split longitudinally to facilitate insertion or may be in the form of a coiled spring. An additional sleeve 11, Fig. 12, stretched over the casing 5 may be employed and is covered by a casing 15. The pipes may be secured by spring arms 12 secured to the casing 5 or 15, the pipe passing through an opening 14 in the arm having a sharp edge for gripping the pipe. In another form, a number of flat springs secured to and extending from the casing 5 have their ends 6, Fig. 2, turned back towards the casing, engaging the pipes to prevent withdrawal. A rigid cap or clip 7 forms a fulcrum for the spring. A ferrule 8 secured loosely in the cap 7 is used for disengaging the spring arm.
