Abstract
567,772. Dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and THOMPSON, W. G. June 15, 1942, No. 8168. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a device for causing a flow of a conducting liquid, such as mercury, of the type in which the liquid flows through a tube which is disposed in a magnetic field, and a current is passed through the liquid at right angles to the magnetic field, the tube is mainly composed of a. material whose electrical conductivity is less or not much greater than that of the liquid, and the transverse electric current is passed between electrodes within the wall of the tube and of a material which makes good electrical contact with the liquid. Preferably, the tube is flattened in the neighbourhood of the magnetic field, and is made of a nickel-chromium alloy, for example, the nickel-chromium-iron alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Ineonel." The electrodes are of nickel or iron. As shown in Fig. 7, the electrodes 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are introduced into slits in the flattened part 3 of the tube 2 and copper brazed thereto at 5. Fig. 8 shows another arrangement in which strips of iron 6 are brazed to the edges of the slit tube 3, and iron electrodes 4 are secured by vitreous enamel 7. In Fig. 4, the electrodes 4 are secured by vitreous enamel to the flanged edges 14 of the tube 13 ; and in a further modification, Fig. 5, the electrodes are nickel wires 8 lying wholly in the tube 7. The tube is placed between the poles of a laminated horseshoe magnet, and the electrodes are in series with the exciting coil. The device may be used for producing a mercury jet in a mercury arc converter, as described in Specifications 51.5,175 and 528,812, [both in Group XL].
