Abstract
Diolefins are made by subjecting polymers of branched chain olefins or copolymers of tertiary and secondary olefins to temperatures above 800 DEG F., e.g. 1200-1400 DEG F., if desired in presence of a catalyst composed of copper gauze, chromic oxide or bauxite. Thus, tertiary olefins in the C4, C5 and C6 naphthas are extracted by acids, polymerized by contacting with acids or acidic containing agents and then cracked. Examples give the results of cracking the dimer of trimethylethylene and the trimer of isobutylene. Mixtures of isobutylene and diolefins are obtained which can be copolymerised with AlCl3 or BF3 to give high molecular weight polymers. Specification 472,553 is referred to.
