Abstract
566,375. Separating iron from sulphide ores. UDY, M. J. Aug. 31, 1942, No. 12259. Convention date, April 15, 1942. [Class 1 (iii)] Sulphide ores are treated to separate the iron from other metals, particularly copper, nickel and cobalt, by smelting to produce a matte and digesting this with sulphuric acid so as to produce (1) an aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate ; (2) gaseous hydrogen sulphide containing the sulphur which was combined with iron ; and (3) a solid residue containing the remaining sulphur and all other elements of the matte. To prevent solution of nickel, cobalt, &c., the conditions should be such that the solution is saturated with respect to ferrous sulphate and/or hydrogen sulphide. The solid residue may be oxidised and treated with acid to produce a solution containing nickel and copper sulphates, from which the copper may be precipitated with hydrogen sulphide.
