Abstract
566,313. Engine stop - gear. KING, Ltd., G. W., and KING, H. W. M. June 15, 1943, No. 9607. [Class 122 (iv)] A cut-out actuating mechanism, e.g. for stopping an electric motor driving a hoist when the load exceeds a predetermined amount comprises a friction clutch 18 between the driving and driven elements 10, 12, and a member 30 normally rotated by the driving element but retarded upon a fall in speed of the driven element to actuate said cut-out 56. The member 30 has a V-shaped end face 36 engaged by pins 37 on the shaft 10 and drives a sleeve 31 provided with vanes 50 enclosed in a liquid-filled casing 32. This casing forms part of an electromagnetic brake 23 on the driven member. The friction clutch is loaded by adjustable springs 25, whereby slip occurs at a predetermined load and the speed of the driven member falls. The vaned member 31 is thus retarded and causes the member 30 to rotate relatively to the driving shaft 10. This relative motion causes axial movement of the member 30, due to the pin and cam engagement 36, 37, which actuates the electric motor cutout 56. The invention may be applied to cut-outs for mechanical or hydraulic drives.
