Abstract
Thermoplastic resins are prepared by polymerizing at ordinary or elevated temperatures dichlorstyrene with two nuclear-substituted chlorine atoms. Copolymers may be prepared by polymerizing the mixed isomers or mixtures with other vinyl compounds. Polymerization accelerators, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, ascaridol, potassium persulphate and sodium perborate may be used. Polymerization at ordinary temperatures may be accelerated by heating at 45 DEG to 50 DEG C. Examples describe the polymerization of 2,4-, 2,6-, 3,4-, 2,5-, 2,3- and 3,5-dichlorstyrene mixtures thereof and mixtures with styrene, a -methyl styrene, acrylic nitrile, methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. The products are soluble in chlorinated solvents and may be plasticized with tricresylphosphate or dibutyl sebacate. A dichlorstyrene may be prepared by chlorinating ethyl benzene in the presence of iron until two chlorine atoms become attached to the ring. The fraction boiling at 204-220 DEG C. is chlorinated in the side chain in the presence of light. The fraction boiling at 104 to 106 DEG C. at 6.5 mm. pressure is passed through a furnace heated to 400 to 450 DEG C. at 15 mm. pressure and the fraction of the product boiling at 81 to 88 DEG C. at 6 mm. pressure separated.
