Abstract
564,800. Electromagnetic relays for railway tracks. TOMLINSON, A. V. (Union Switch & Signal Co.). Oct. 30, 1942, No. 15269. [Class 105] [Also in Group XXXVII] When a train enters or leaves a section 1, 1a, the sudden change of current in the coil 7 of an induction relay rotates a conducting vane 8 which passes between the poles of a permanent magnet 20 so that' this rocks about its axis 21 and operates contacts 24, 25. A slow rotation of the vane 8 due to change in resistance of the track because of rain, for example, will cause no movement of the magnet 20. When the coil 7 is energized, the vane rotates into a position such as that shown against the action of a biassing weight and closes other contacts 14, 15. In the form shown, this rotation of the vane will cause a momentary clockwise rocking of the magnet 20 so that contacts 23, 24 are closed momentarily, actuating a relay TRS with a maintaining circuit which is later broken when contacts 25, 26 are separated by the counter-clockwise rotation of the magnet 20 due to the release of the vane 8 due to the de-energization of the magnet 7 due to a train entering the section. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the magnet 20 is retained in its displaced position by a dead-centre snap device.
